Last year, the Carolina RailHawks started their inaugural season with 5 consecutive losses while managing only 4 goals in those 5 games. 2008 got off to a much brighter start for Carolina as within 7 minutes of the 2008 pre-season kickoff against UNC-Greensboro on Friday night, the RailHawks had a commanding 3-0 lead in route to a 5 goal win over the Spartans.
RailHawks' new signing Jacob Coggins, who lead the USL-2 last season in goals, delivered on exactly what is expected of him as he makes the jump to USL-1: making sure balls end up in the back of the net. First Coggins assisted Joel Bailey in the 2nd minute to finish a beautiful combination play with Frankie Sanfilippo and Martin Nuñez and then Coggins scored a brace in the 6th and 7th minutes, finishing once with his head and once with his feet. After Coggins' 2nd goal hit the back of the net, RailHawks coach Scott Schweitzer could be seen cracking a gigantic smile from the bench -- something he rarely had a chance to do last season as the RailHawks struggled to find the back of the net.
Schweitzer played his starting lineup, which still lacked several key players such as Dan Antoniuk, Matt Watson, and Kupono Low who are yet to arrive in training camp, for about 30 minutes before making wholesale changes to give tryout candidates a chance to impress. Marc-Herold Gracien and Nathan Zuzga didn't hurt their causes one bit as they both added goals in the second half to give the final 5-0 scoreline.
The RailHawks face their next pre-season test against the Fighting Camels of Campbell University on Tuesday night at 7:00pm
