The Carolina RailHawks followed up their first win in franchise history earlier this week with their first league win as they topped the league-leading Atlanta Silverbacks 2-1 at Silverbacks Park in Atlanta. The win shot the RailHawks up the league table into a fourth-place tie with the Puerto Rico Islanders, pending other results on Saturday evening.
The RailHawks got on the scoreboard first when Atlanta was judged to have handled the ball inside their penalty area. Kupono Low doubled his season goal total from the penalty spot in the 8th minute. Then in the 29th minute, Chad Dombrowski jumped on a deflection from a David Stokes cross to tally the winning goal. Just before halftime, Justin Moore cut the RailHawks lead in half when he beat Caleb Norkus onto the end of a Daniel Antoniuk header to beat Chris McClellan for the Silverbacks' only goal.
For the second game in a row, the RailHawks played the final half hour of the match down a man as David Stokes was sent off in the 60th minute for two bookable offenses. The Atlanta attack was relentless but the fine Carolina defense, who continue to lead the USL-1 in goals-against average, did not break under the late efforts of the Silverbacks. With the win in the first match of the Southern Derby, Carolina sits atop the supporters' cup table heading into a non-derby match against the Charleston Battery next Saturday.
