Sarah Kirkley kicked in a short shot with 1:22 left to give Broughton a 1-0 victory over Charlotte Providence in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A girls soccer championship.

Broughton, which won the same title last year, finished 26-0-1 after tying Durham Riverside 0-0 in its opener. The Caps have been in the championship game 12 of the past 13 seasons and have won nine state titles since 1992. Caps coach Izzy Hernandez now has a 375-27-23 career girls soccer coaching record.

    And such a good game it was. I've never seen such an enthusiastic turnout for a high school game. I go to Broughton and I brought along some drums and stuff and we got an entire stand chanting in the 2nd half of the game.
