The United States Men’s National Team defeated the USL’s Charleston Battery 5–0 in a scrimmage at SAS Soccer Park on Thursday. Bruce Arena’s squad has been training at the Park for the past week.

Landon Donovan scored twice and DaMarcus Beasley and Eddie Johnson added goals for the national squad in the first half. Midfielder John O’Brien scored off a free kick in the second half to add to the United States’ tally.

Video highlights are available via US Soccer. The U.S. will wrap up training in Cary on Saturday, May 20. Training camp remains closed to the public.

Not having seen the game, I'd guess this score speaks to how fit the players were coming into camp. I remember in '02 that the players were pretty beat up after several days of grueling workouts and had dead legs against the Richmond Kickers. This isn't the case this year.

This team seems to be in better shape (literally and metaphorically) than '02, but of course the group is tougher this time. We'll need every advantage we can get.
