Duke men’s soccer head coach John Rennie announced the addition of Justin Serpone to the coaching staff on Monday. Serpone takes over as an assistant coach in charge of goalies for the defending ACC champions.

“Justin comes here after being the top assistant at Northwestern” said Head Coach John Rennie. “He helped build that program to a top-20 level team and will be an asset to our goalkeepers and brings a background in recruiting, scouting and video analysis.”
Serpone comes to Duke after serving as an assistant coach at Northwestern for the past three seasons. He helped guide the Wildcats to an overall record of 31-20-10 and the school’s first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004. Northwestern advanced to the 2004 Big Ten Championship game and achieved a ranking of 23rd. Last season he helped lead the Wildcats to a ranking of 14th in the NSCAA poll. While at Northwestern, his duties included assisting in all aspects of recruiting, evaluating opposition, preparing comprehensive scouting reports and serving as the primary video coordinator. He also was responsible for the organization, advertisement and hiring of the Northwestern Boys Soccer Camps.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be joining one of the top soccer programs and best academic schools in the country,” said Serpone. “I enjoyed helping Tim Lenahan build the Northwestern program but I felt it was time for the next challege which coaching for one of the top soccer programs in the country presents.”

Serpone recently earned his Premier license from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). He coached NU goalkeeper Justin Pines to Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, Soccer America Team of the Week and Sports Illustrated Faces in the Crowd honors during the 2004 season. As NU’s assistant recruiting coordinator, Serpone signed NU’s 2004 class of five student-athletes which included a Freshman All-America selection in David Roth.

Prior to working at Northwestern, Serpone was the assistant coach at Lafayette College for two seasons. He led the Leopards to two top-10 regional rankings while guiding the goalkeepers and serving as the recruiting coordinator. He also co-founded Soccer Argentina in 2003, a company that takes competitive high school boy’s and girl’s players to Argentina each summer. He has also served as the head club coach for FC Chicago since 2003, overseeing coaching and training for all seven teams in the club, including the U17 squad which has qualified for several national tournaments. He has also been an assistant coach for the HUB Soccer Club in Denville, N.J., for one year and also spent a season with the Boston Lightning Soccer Club in Medford, Mass.

A native of Winchester, Mass., Serpone earned a B.A. in economics with a minor in computer science in 2001 from Drew University. served as president of the Student Government Association for two terms and also founded Students Against Violence Everywhere in 1999, in addition to helping with other service organizations. He was a four-year letterwinner in soccer at Drew, starting at goalkeeper and compiling a record of 61-19-4. He helped his team qualify for postseason play in all four seasons and to a top-25 national ranking in 2000. They cracked the top-10 in the regional rankings in each of his four years from 1997-2000.
