That thunderous sound heard around the Triangle this evening may very well have be the Montreal Impact hammering home the nails in the coffin of the RailHawks 2008 playoff hopes as they took a 2-0 victory over the listless RailHawks at WakeMed Soccer Park.
After a 2 hour rain delay, the RailHawks were afforded a golden opportunity to claw their way back into the USL-1 playoff race when Montreal's Pizzolito saw red for a studs up challenge in the 15th minute. With a potential 75 minute man advantage and a Montreal team preoccupied with their 6:15am departure from RDU for Honduras for the return leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, things were looking up for the RailHawks' chances. Instead, they turned in yet another tepid offensive performance, allowed Montreal's Byers to score on a defensive lapse at the back just before the halftime interval, and finally conceded a second to Byers 7 minutes after Fusilier erased the odd-man advantage when he was sent off in the 76th minute for a challenge from behind.
The only bright spot remaining in Carolina's season is that 2 of their final four matches are against Charleston, a team they have owned in the past. The RailHawks are 4-0-0 against the Battery in franchise history and have yet to concede a goal to Charleston in 4 meetings.
Bonne chance Montréal in Honduras! Represent USL-1 well on the international stage.
