Many RailHawks' supporters showed up at Friday's match stunned, and even a little bewildered, by the
news that the RailHawks' leading goal scorer Connally Edozien had been traded away to Miami FC for a young reserve defender. For the merits, it's hard to argue that in a lineup so fully stocked with talented forwards and struggling defensively that a trade switching a striker who saw little playing time and was clearly out of favor in the coach's rotation for a young up-and-coming defender is a bad thing. It seems the right thing for the front office to do. But that doesn't change the fact that Edozien was no doubt a fan favorite, a genuinely nice guy, and part of our local soccer community as a role model for numerous youth players with his job as a coach of two teams for Triangle FC. The business of soccer rolls on, but we'll miss you Connally!
Some of my favorite memories in our short franchise history are linked to Edozien. First, there was the amazing strike he had on the road in Vancouver to break the defending USL champs 16 game unbeaten streak. Then, there was the time when Connally was out of the lineup suspended -- instead of watching the match from the director's box, he joined us in the 204 Depot, standing at the South railing yelling encouragement to his teammates along with TSF, and even taking a turn beating the bass drum for a while. But my favorite RailHawks' memory has to be his hattrick against Charleston to secure Carolina's Southern Derby Cup last season.
About half a dozen of us made the 5 hour trip to Blackbaud Stadium for the chance to see the RailHawks win the Derby. The team came out flying high and the six away supporters did our best to shout down the entire Regiment (Charleston's supporters section). Edozien gave us plenty to sing about that night as he used both his feet and his head to drain any hope the Battery had of staving off a Cup loss as he provided 3 clinical finishes. I sent my first RailHawks' baseball cap onto the pitch of Blackbaud stadium that night in honor of Connally's hattrick performance. High on Cup victory and blown away by Edozien's performance, we partied well into the night and the drive home seemed a lot shorter as we celebrated Carolina's first trophy.
