Wow, it's been a rollercoaster month for soccer fans in the Triangle. As the frigid NCAA College Cup closed out at WakeMed Soccer Park, RailHawks fans' excitement over the birth of the NASL turned to anxiety over the fate of the upcoming season as the US Soccer Federation ruled that it would sanction neither the NASL or USL-1 for 2010 unless the two leagues came to a compromise for the upcoming season. With the USSF serving as mediator, cooler heads prevailed and RailHawks fans were given a bonus -- under the USSF-brokered compromise 2nd Division in 2010, Carolina will have 11 opponents instead only the other 8 NASL teams meaning once again we'll get to see CONCACAF Champions League standouts Puerto Rico Islanders, upstart Austin Aztex, and MLS-bound Portland Timbers playing at WakeMed Soccer Park next year.
In my opinion, I think this compromise league may just be a blessing in disguise for the NASL. Now, with a year to get their front offices up and running while playing under the umbrella of the USSF 2nd Division, the North American Soccer League will get a running start for 2011, much like the RailHawks did when they put their front office in place in 2006 before launching the franchise on the field in 2007.
While we eagerly await for the RailHawks to put out the 2010 schedule in the next few weeks so we can all plan our Spring and Summer, there's lots of soccer on TV this month to keep us occupied. TSF would like to invite all RailHawks fans to join us for some upcoming viewing party events around the Triangle. Click on the links below for more information:
Remember, you don't have to be a member of TSF to participate in any of our events so I look forward to seeing all RailHawks fans out at one of our events soon!
Cheer! Chant! Drum! Sing! Support!
